with comments from Philip Grosset "I took this shot through glass using zoom lens on auto exposure but manual focus, I was quite pleased with the result but - there is always a but! - there is a little blue light on his chin, what would cause it and how can I avoid it? Would appreciate your comments." (Jenny Coughlan living in Wicklow Ireland) |

| Congratulations on your photo on the left. I think it is very good. The blue light you mention can hardly be seen. It's just how the shadow area has come out. This might have been because of the lighting, the glass or the presence of some blue object near it. However, in my version on the right I've lightened the shadow area to remove it, and also increased the contrast of the picture. It is simplest to do this using a photo-editing program like Photoshop Elements. It certainly makes a fine picture.

| What spoils your photo on the left is the inclusion of the two heads in the foreground. You should have waited until they were out of the way. Alternatively you could try cropping the picture as on the right. |

| Your photo on the left could be improved by coming in closer, as on the right. |

| On the right, I've come in closer so as to concentrate on the most interesting part of the subject, and have also straightened the picture out so that the chimneys are vertical, instead of leaning over to the left. This is something that needs to be checked very carefully when taking a photo. Look out for a strong horizontal or vertical line that will help you ensure that the camera is held really level. |

| The wires stretching across the foreground are a major distraction. I'm afraid they quite spoil the picture. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Again, we are a little too far away in your photo on the left, so, on the right, I've experimented by moving the two groups of derricks (?) closer together to provide a stronger pattern. It's always worth trying out several viewpoints before settling on the one you finally use. |

| The black space on the left doesn't seem necessary, so I've tried removing it. An alternative might have been to make use of it by showing the man looking into it, but even so you could have done with much less of it. But it certainly makes an arresting picture. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
