"I am trying to get a digital portrait business going and wanted your rating on these pics. Any advice is welcome. I want to do this as a mobile operation where I would go to a clients home or special place of choice. I`m using a Minolta Dimage 7i. Any advice on other equipment I would need other than lighting? (have tripod). Thank You." (Rodney Payne - Jetersville,Va)

Your photo on the left makes a happy picture, and It's a good idea to look slightly up at your subject as you have done here. It would look a lot better, though, without the distracting plank in the background, as in my version on the right.

Portait amended

The very flat lighting on your subject's face in your photo on the left is accentuated in b&w. In my version on the right I've tried to produce less even lighting to increase the modelling effect. I've also come in a little closer and made the subject more central (in this case, this is what seemed to look best). Generally speaking, it's often more attractive to have your subject facing slightly away from you, but turning towards you.

Your photo on the left looks a little dark. so on the right I've lightened it up and come in closer here too so that all the emphasis is on your subject. This works very well.

The other item of equipment you may need is a reflector. A book you might find helpful is The Better Guide to Photographing People that is described at the top of my Books page.

"Thanks for such a great site.I would like your opinion on this picture.I used full telephoto and portrait setting on my Minolta Dimage 7i. Its a little bit centered I know. How is the lighting? You have a great website.I wind up here every time I get online. Thank You" (Rodney Payne- Jetersville,Va)

Your photo on the left looks fine but, if you're aiming for a real portrait, I'd try coming in closer, as on the right, where I've also moved your subject slightly to the right so as to leave more space in front of her than behind her. But I like the way you've got her turning to look at the camera, and the simple background (although it would have been simpler still if you'd excluded the little bit of sky). The lighting is an improvement too, even if her eyes are a bit lost in shadow (and in her hair!).

"Hello Philip coud you please tell me what i can improve in my pictures. In the First one i know its impossible to have a good picture in backlight but the background was so beautiful.
In the second one the porpouse was to get everything in the picture, but the problem is i look to far, so what i can improve there.
And also i have a question and teh thing is i love to take pictures of airplanes but i dont have a digital camera so i have to scan it but the result that i have with the picture is not the best, so if you see picture number 3 and tell me what can i improve i would be very thankfull. Thank you for all your help and your time." (Santiago Guarin)

Scenery cropped
Scenery
Your photo on the left has a fine dramatic background, but the figure perched right in the middle distracts from it. On the right, I've tried moving him to one side. It would have been better, though, if he'd been shown outlined against the sky rather than blocking part of our view of the hill.

It's often better not to try to get everything into the one picture. Here you might have taken one shot of the building (but not, as here, excluding the top of it) and a separate close shot of the man standing in front of it.

Plane
Plane lightened
I think your photo on the left has come out well. However, it's just a little underexposed so detail is lost in the shadow area. On the right, I've lightened it a bit so that we can now see the blue color and the door in the tail. I've also removed some empty sky above the plane, as in the original it rather looks as though it is about to fall out of the bottom of the picture. But perhaps you were trying to suggest that it was landing.
