| Your photo on the left would have been much more pleasing if the child had been turning round more so that we could have seen at least part of her face. It's a good idea to leave space in front of the girl for her to look into, but here there seems an unnecessarily large area of empty sea to her left, although I like the contrast between her and the differing blues of the sea behind her. Your photo on the right makes effective use of the glittering sea, but it would have been better if you'd been able to use a slighty higher camera position so as to have left more space between the sail and the foreground objects that, as it is, rather dominate the picture. Reply from Kamal Chilaka: "thank you for your comments. Its a big help for a beginner to get prompt response from a professional. Thank you. Regarding your website. Navigation around the website is a little confusing and time consuming. That is an area that could be improved" This site was originally planned to be worked through from beginning to end - but there's a link to the contents list (that includes a search engine) on every page. I subsequently added a shorter version of the contents list to the foot of every page. "I really appreciate your site! I would greatly appreciate your feedback on the attached photos. All were taken with my Canon AE-1 with a Canon 35-105 zoom. raingear.jpg I mostly just wanted to capture the colorful gear. I've also got a cropped version of this. I basically took just the top half of the picture. I'm not sure which I prefer. I think I could have used a larger aperture setting to blur out the background to better emphasize the main subject. fort.jpg I think this one would look better cropped a little closer so the girls fill more of the picture, but I do like the interest added by the texture of the wooden fort. Alissa.jpg This is a cropped version of the original photograph that includes more of the background & a plate of food (yech). I liked the natural backlighting. threekids.jpg This was a quick shot. I wanted to get them before they went into their "camera faces". Unfortunately the background is a little distracting & my daughter is a bit out of focus. Thanks for your input, Regards." | I think your photo on the left is great fun, and made all the more so because the boots are included! On the right, I've tried brightening up the picture to bring out the colors even more, and I've also thrown the background slightly more out of focus, as you suggested. |

| I like your photo on the left too, but, on the right, have tried coming in closer as you suggest. I think this is even more effective. If you wanted to show the fort, it might have been worth taking a separate shot concentrating more on it. It's often worth taking at least a couple of pictures, one to show a particularly interesting setting and another to provide a close shot of the people you want to feature. |

| I too like the backlighting in your photo on the left. It's always tricky to get the exposure right in the shadow area, and I've increased it a little in my version on the right. Fill-in flash can be useful here. I've also moved in a fraction closer, with your daughter's eyes now nearer a third of the way down the picture. I think this makes it look more like a deliberate portrait. |

| This is the least successful of these photos because it is cropped too tightly round the edges giving an unfortunate cut-off effect, and ideally you really needed to find a way of getting the children's faces closer together. But it's still a happy record, and I realise why you needed to work fast! | ||||||||||||||||||
Altogether, a very pleasing set of pictures - and thanks for giving me all the background info. It's much easier for me to be helpful when this is done, than when, as sometimes happens, I just get sent some photos without a single word of explanation! Reply from Tony Adrian: "Thank you for your quick posting of your review of my photographs. It's great to get feedback from a professional. My interest in photography has recently been re-kindled and I look forward to experimenting further. I find the photo review pages on your site very helpful... I now have some very useful tips to keep in mind as I take more photographs. I only wish I could send you more photos as I continue to learn." |
