"Stumbled onto your site, and would love to get some critical feedback on a few photos. The thing is, I don't really set out with any tangible goal in mind, photo-wise, except to get the most interesting picture I can, whatever that means. They were all taken in southern Russia. So here goes." (Nicola Kim, Toronto, Ontario)

Woman and boy
Your photo on the left is certainly an interesting photo and gives a real feeling of the place, but perhaps you could have come in a little closer, as I've done on the right. This places the emphasis more firmly on the woman and the boy, but retains enough of the background to establish the setting. However, if you want the emphasis to be on the setting, keep your version just as it is. It's a pity, though, that their faces weren't more sharply in focus.

Mountain
I like your dramatic mountain photo on the left, although, ideally, perhaps, the figure (?), a third of the way along the foot of it, could have been just a little further away from the bottom of the frame, so as to prevent it looking as though it's about to fall out of the bottom of the picture. I'm assuming it is a figure, but it's really too far away to be sure. If it is a person, a closer view would have added to the interest.

This is very attractively composed using the rule of thirds, but I'm not very keen about the overwhelming orange tint which distracts attention away from the statue.

"These are pictures that I have taken on my travels to the USA. The first picture in Boston was taken around Beacon Hill and I just loved the cabbages. in the second picture I was attracted by the difference between the office block (new) and the original State House (old). Finally I just liked the tranquillity of this scene in the Rockies. Would much appreciate your observations or criticisms." (Bill Leharne, London, England)

The flowers and shadows make this an attractive picture on the left, but as it was the cabbages that interested you, perhaps it would benefit from showing them a bit more clearly. Maybe your photo could be accompanied by a close-up of them, as on the right.

Boston Boston cropped
I like your photo on the left very much. The two buildings make a very effective contrast, as you spotted. I'm wondering, though, whether the absolute middle of the picture is the most interesting place for the tower, so on the right I've tried moving it slightly to one side.

Rockies lightened
Rockies
Your photo on the left is attractive too, but was a bit dark when it reached me, so, on the right, I've lightened it, and also cropped away a dark area at the bottom. I like the way you've included some leaves at the top - any sort of foreground framing helps, even if here it's a bit minimal.
These make an interesting set of pictures.
