"Your website re. photography is very good. It was a pleasure reading the section on how to compose interesting photos. I'm sending you two pictures of my niece, who's 2 weeks old. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Also, i would like to be a professional photographer. Where should I start?" (Ellan Leiderman)

Flash has its disadvantages: here its full frontal glare is caught on the mother's forehead, and there is also slight red-eye, although this can't be seen when the picture is reduced to this size. It can look more natural if you just use the light from a nearby window.

Your photo on the left might be improved by coming in closer, as on the right. This makes it a really attractive picture, and your subjects stand out well from your carefully chosen background.
For information about becoming a professional in the USA, see the book Opportunities in Photography Careers. There's a link to it at the foot of my More Books page,as well as a similar recommendation for UK readers.

"Hello, My name is Tim McMunn from Sheboygan Wisconsin, U.S.A. The first picture was taken at the Milwaukee zoo from A moving tram. I'm using A Nikon N80 with A 28 to 200 lens. this is the actual print.
the second picture was taken at a state park near my home in Wisconsin. the deer are quite tame and as we have no snow yet they are easy to photograph. Nikon N80 with 28 to 200.
picture #3 is from a race track near here maybe you have heard of it Road America? It was taken during the S.C.C.A. June sprints in 2001.The road course offers many photo opportunities for great pictures. I tried to get the track to flow thought the picture I'm not sure of the effect. Nikon N80 and 28 to 200 lens.
picture #4 is of my dog at home. she loves to play with empty film containers. I really love your site and found it very informative. Any comment or criticism will be well taken. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL from Tim McMunn and family." (Tim McMunn)

Deer
Goats
The main way to improve all three photos would be to get in much closer so that we can really see the goats, deer and cars. The snag with taking a photo from a moving tram is that the result may not be absolutely sharp - and that's what happened with your first picture. It was a good idea to get the track to flow through the third picture, but it really needs cars in the more immediate foreground so that the main emphasis is on them not on the track.

Try to concentrate attention on the most interesting part of the scene, as I have tried to do here.

This is an appealing picture on the left, but might be even better if you removed the empty areas at each side, as on the right.
